My special dog steps

I may have a long body but my legs (do not laugh) are only 3 inches long! Thats my legs and steps in this picture.

Yep, I only stand a few inches off the floor and to tell the truth, I do not really like the floor. I spend a lot of time on my human’s bed and the soft chairs but they are so high up.

Instead, I have my own special stairs – I am the only one allowed to use them.
I love my stairs because I do not have to wait to be picked-up – I am a little stubborn so waiting is not my thing.

I have a set of stairs by my human’s bed and a set that leads to the soft big cuddling chair in front of the fire. They are very portable so we even take them when I stay at friends houses.

I personally do not mind things getting dirty but my human is happy that she can take the cover off and wash it in the washing machine.

Do not damage your Dachshunds back.

Dachshunds have very long backs – we are nearly a dog and a half in length – and we should not be jumping. We can damage our backs even if we are still young.
Many Dachshunds sadly get hurt very badly (or worse) from jumping down from things.
Please do everything you can to stop you Dachshund from jumping.

I own a little red Dachshund called Luke. He is so funny, happy, and a loving little boy, he means the world to me.

When my husband and I decided to spend some time in Spain, we of course took Luke with us from Florida. It dawned on me how strange it must have been for some of the children to leave behind their friends. This got my brain churning and thinking how Luke has just made this big trip and also left behind his two Dachshund best friends Dottie and Sara. After an intense learning curve I wrote and self published, a book called Dachshund Luke goes to Spain. This is written through the eyes of Dachshund Luke and is packed with color photo’s.

 A true story written through the eyes of one lovable Dachshund called Luke. 

Luke was happily living with his humans in Florida and enjoying his Dachshund friends Dotty and Sara. One day he noticed things were missing from his home and strange boxes were appearing.

This book follows Dachshund Luke from Florida, his first time on a plane and his experiences in a new country without his friends. A place where he does not understand what the other humans are saying and mules are a common form of transport. At first, he enjoys the new smells but after awhile he starts to feel lonely and misses his friends. When his humans bring home a new kitten he does not understand this new feeling of jealousy and starts to misbehave.

Hello everyone, this is Dachshund Luke.

That is enough to get my tail wagging.

I am a little red Dachshund with 3-inch legs, and weigh 9 lbs on a good day.
My name is Luke, also known as Bubba Lou and stop barking.

I am currently living in Spain with my humans and a cat called Kitty Kat. To my surprise, I found out that kittens grow bigger than me and have magic claws.

In Florida, I was a sausage dog however, in Spain, I am now a perro salchicha – I love perro, don’t you think it sounds better than dog?

I love my humans and I know they love me because they cuddle and play with me every day. I love to make them laugh because it makes my tail waggle and wiggle.

I have recently taught my humans how to play hide-n-seek. I hide the ball in corners or under the sofa and they have to find it. I point to it with my nose. If they don’t notice that I am playing then I bark, they don’t like that as much. I am better at finding than my humans, that’s because I am a hound dog.

Dachshund rescue needs foster homes

 Save Dachshunds from shelters

There are many Dachshund rescue groups and they all need loving foster homes to look after the Dachshunds until they are adopted.

When a Dachshund has the misfortune of finding itself in a dog shelter, he is of course scared and lonely and among hundreds of other dogs looking for a home. Some shelters have so many dogs that they cannot keep them all and sadly have to put some down. 

This is where the Dachshund rescue groups come in. The rescue groups go to the shelter and remove the Dachshund, in some instances saving its life. If the Dachshund is sick, the group pays for all the medical care. The little one is then placed in a caring foster home that has been approved by the group.

As a foster home, you have to be able to socialize and train your new charge making him adoptable.

The rescue group that I volunteered for where very helpful in providing many guidelines and a contact person that I could call anytime for advice.

Just treat him like he is part of the family and it is surprising how fast they adapt to their new surroundings. 

The length of time a foster Dachshund will stay in your home varies widely. Young puppies are in demand, so are adopted quicker than an older dog with heartworm. There are dedicated foster homes who take in Dachshunds that due to illness or age may stay with them for years.

 

You do of course have a certain say in which dogs you are willing to take. If you do find yourself with one that really does not fit into your home, it may be possible to find him a more suitable foster home. However, give them all a chance first; sometimes a dog that may seem snappy could just be upset and missing his home. Often with love and care, they settle down quickly.  

 

Dachshund Luke, our little love enjoyed the foster dogs and was willing to except them into his home. He did get a little protective with his toys but they always worked it out between them.

Sometimes Luke was the alpha dog in the group and other times he let a newbie take over.

We wanted the fosters to be part of our daily life so they shared our entire home with us.

Dachshund Luke is quite excepting of other dogs in his home but this is something you will have to consider if you already have a Dachshund other pets or children.

All members of your household must be happy to be part of this otherwise; it will not be a rewarding experience for you or the dogs.

 Please look at a Dachshund rescue group in your area to find out guidelines and information about the possibility of opening up your home to a homeless Dachshund.

If fostering is not for you then at least consider getting your next Dachshund from a rescue group.

When you fill out the forms and hand over your dog to the Pet Cargo department, he begins a journey without you to monitor him, similar to your luggage.

Luggage not arriving is an inconvenience; you file a complaint and let off a bit of steam at the lost luggage office, buy a new set of underwear and a toothbrush and hope that it magically appears at your hotel before the end of your vacation.

Your dog not arriving is unforgivable and stressful to say the least.

When he transferred between the warehouse, cargo, and plane, you want everyone to remember his crate. The more it stands out from the other crates the better.

We were surprised after measuring Luke that due to his long back he needed a larger cage than we would have purchased.

If you are planning to take your dog with you to another country, he is going to need a cage/crate. He will also have to go in the hold of the plane.

Let us face it many Dachshund’s owners tend to let their little ones sleep in bed with them. They love to burrow under the blankets, keep you warm and do not take up much room. He had a little soft blue cat bed that he liked to drag around the house and that is what he holed up in when we went out. Luke was never crate trained. In hindsight, he should have been however now the time had come. 

We recently flew from America to Spain with Dachshund Luke and decided to fly with Continental Airlines; of course, Luke was going on the same flight.

Important: Not any cage/crate will do.

Check with the airline for all special crate requirements – some have additional requirements.

Find an airline approved crate supplier and make sure they meet airline requirements.

We used the ‘Petmate sky kennel’ with the additional raised floor and dry mats. This came complete with two food bowls and met all the requirements for Continental Airlines.

Run with the wind

 

I totally needed to take a break from my addiction of surfing. Not the energetic get wet type but the sit on my bottom looking at other people’s online life. Although Dachshund Luke is more than happy for me to stuff him up my jumper so he can take a nap and more than patient with me while I check my email, facebook, blogs, other peoples blogs, clicking away into the unknown, there comes a time in the day that I need to get up. Not just into the kitchen for another cup of tea, but really get up. 

Again, Luke saves me from this clicking madness and unfolds himself from the warm of my sweater, stretching his long body he gives me that look. Dog owners know it. It is that time for a walk look. I peel myself off and out of my computer chair refreshing my email, one last time and tear myself away from my glowing screen. Luke is right we need to get out of here for a while. 

Once out on the dusty river road I ponder why we do not spend more time outside. It is stunning, wonderful snow capped (yep still snow) mountains poking into blue skies. Paths in all directions, taking you along the river or up into the mountain, miles of tracks surrounded by blooming spring flowers and hardly a human in sight. They beckon but not for today. Luke’s little legs and his desire to sniff every blade of Mule and goat trodden grass makes it hard for him to go on long walks. 

It is windy today so his ears are flapping. He seems to love it when it is windy and likes to run with the wind. Really wish I could let him run free however; he just has no road sense. Even though not many cars pass along these tracks, you do get the occasional car transporting the locals to their plots of vegetables and Luke being so short is nearly unnoticeable among the ruts in the ground. He also has a habit of walking along nicely until he wants to go home. Then he shoots ahead, little legs kicking up dust and suddenly becomes deaf to all his commands.

Have you ever tried to catch up with a running Dachshund?

No, well let me tell you they may have little legs but they can boogie. So much to the amazement of the locals who rarely allow their dogs in the house let alone ever purchase a lead for it, Luke walks along happily and safely attached to his expanding lead.

Dachshund up a sweatshirt

Frazzled neurons need calming

Surprised that I can still move after my 13 mile hike yesterday, I decided to give myself the luxury of surfing the net without that nagging guilty feeling. You know the one telling us that we should be doing something more constructive with our time. So sipping coffee I float from page to page, blog to blog like a TV addict who’s just got cable.

Not able to stick to one subject I am all over the place, subject jumping with no fixed agenda. My brain is starting to frazzle, neurons jumping and zapping in the wrong places due to a combination of information overload and caffeine. I have so many pages open yet I can’t find the link to the site I wanted to go back to and actually read. I have to let it go, I will never find that site again, so deeply imbedded in my searches, links and clicks it will remain unread by me. Deep breaths, try to calm down and not click anything for a second or two.

Brain still racing I drag my eyes away from my screen of many bright pages and what do I see? Two deep pools of brown eyes at the end of a long but low body staring at me as if I were a god. His little skinny pig like tail starts to wag. Already I can feel the slowing of my spinning brain cogs as I bend down and stroke my little Dachshund Luke. His bum is now in full wag and wiggle mode and he stretches up my old wooden chair with the desire to be picked up. How can I resist? Up he comes to join me in front of the bright screen. He soon starts to dig at the ribbing of my sweat shirt and then disappears under and settles down with a snort. It is his favorite place to be, snuggled under anything warm and cozy. This funny loving little creature is bringing a smile to my lips and a soothing to the brain. The warmth from his body seeps to my skin calming me down. Now I can focus, I go back to searching on-line for all things beautiful, fun and amazing. When I feel the overload creeping on I just have to pet little Luke and know all can be calm in my world.

Soon it will be time for some ball throw, find and fetch and then a walk along the river. Not too far for he only has little legs.

Thanks Luke for reminding me that life should be enjoyed and lived in the moment not lost in links and clicks.
